• Grubs are the larvae of Japanese beetles or European Chafer beetles
• They feed on the roots of the lawn normally in September and October causing grass to die seemingly overnight
• The life cycle is one year for most grubs. They hatch in August, begin to feed on the roots of the lawn causing the grass to die. If not controlled grubs will borrow deep into the soil for the winter months. Come spring the grubs will pupate and in early summer and will emerge as adult Japanese or European Chafer beetles. This is the time you see the beetles flying around the landscape plants and gardens.
• Adult beetles do not harm the lawn however they do eat on plants and some trees.
• Adults have a short 30-45 day life span during this time females will mate and lay 3-5 eggs per every 24-48 hours. A single female can lay up to 245 eggs during her short life. Females use lawns to lay eggs in because of the abundance of food available.
